Assange would have been extradited to Sweden under the European Arrest Warrant system,” the report said. Assange has been accused by Swedish prosecutors of rape, sexual molestation, and unlawful coercion. He’s in the United Kingdom right now, living in the Ecuadorean Embassy. He denies the allegations and has been granted political asylum by Ecuador. Should Sweden officially file charges against Assange, they will be taken to the European Court of Justice in the European Union, which would then be expected to rule on the extradition request. This report of Assange’s possible extradition is the latest of a series of bombshells dropped by HuffPost and other outlets. Swedish prosecutors also requested that another suspect be arrested in Sweden, where the allegations against him have surfaced. WikiLeaks began publishing thousands of classified military and diplomatic documents that pointed to a US role in the “Arab Spring” revolutions last December. The documents were released in three waves, with WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange pleading guilty to hacking charges and spending a year in jail. Swedish officials have maintained that the documents didn’t lead directly to Assange’s extradition. “So far, we have no indication that the Assange case will be dealt with by the Swedish Prosecutor General, but we have chosen to act in order to protect our citizens, and in order to uphold the rule of law,” Per Ake Sandgren, a spokesman for Sweden’s prosecutor’s office told The Guardian.
